London Urban Landscape Photography – 1 Day Workshop

Join me for a full day exploring London’s streets and spaces through a creative, fine-art lens. Over the past year, I’ve been developing new work that focuses on light, form, and fleeting human presence within the urban environment, and this workshop is your chance to step into that process.

This isn’t a traditional street photography day focused on portraits or candid interactions. Instead, we’ll take a more interpretive approach, creating urban landscapes that explore the relationship between people and place. Think of it as finding beauty and balance in geometry, architecture, light, and motion, with the occasional human figure adding scale, rhythm, or contrast, often silhouetted or abstracted within the scene.

Together, we’ll wander through some of London’s most atmospheric areas, from striking modern architecture and hidden alleyways to reflective glass facades and bold urban geometry, seeking out compositions that evoke mood and narrative.

Even if the weather turns grey, we’ll use it to our advantage. Overcast skies and diffused light can bring out tone, structure, and subtlety in the city’s textures.

During the day we’ll cover:

  • Seeing the city as an artist, recognising light, form, and atmosphere

  • Using motion, panning, and slower shutter speeds to convey energy and flow

  • Creating balanced, minimal, or graphic compositions within busy environments

  • Incorporating human elements for scale or emotion without relying on direct portraiture

  • Simple exercises to help you loosen up, observe differently, and build creative confidence

What you’ll need

Any camera will do, mirrorless, DSLR, or compact. A versatile zoom or small prime lens works well, but the key is to bring something you’re comfortable with.
A 3–4 stop ND filter can be handy if you’d like to experiment with motion blur or longer exposures.
No tripod is required.

You’re very welcome to get in touch beforehand if you’d like to chat about gear or settings.

We’ll break midway through the day for a stop at a local coffee shop, time for a sandwich, a coffee, and a bit of conversation before heading back out for the afternoon session.

The pace is relaxed, with plenty of space for one-to-one feedback, demonstrations, and open discussion. This isn’t about chasing technical perfection it’s about developing your eye, your creative confidence, and learning to see the urban world in a new way.

While you’ll likely go home with a handful of strong new images, the real value of this workshop lies in learning to see differently to recognise opportunities, compositions, and moods that might have gone unnoticed before. The goal is to give you tools and ways of thinking that you can apply long after the day itself, the photographic equivalent of teaching you to fish, rather than simply showing you where to cast.

Group sizes are kept small, ensuring you’ll receive individual attention whether you’re new to urban photography or simply looking to refresh and expand your creative approach.

What Clients Say

"This was my second workshop with Chris to the Isle of Harris, and like the first trip it was a fantastic experience. Chris introduced me to ICM during my first trip and with his experience, patience and enthusiasm, it gave me another outlook on photography to bring home.  Chris’s choice of locations and the best time to shoot, was invaluable. There was plenty of opportunity for one-on-one time with Chris, be it during the day or during the evening processing the days catch. This was a real great benefit and provided an insight into all aspects of photography.  It was great getting to know everyone in the group as well, great camaraderie, even when you’re fighting the sand and rain at times, but it’s worth it, believe you me.I would thoroughly recommend any of Chris’s workshops, to any keen photographer who wants to improve their photography, as I have had with Chris on the Isle of Harris.

Thanks Chris for a both trips to Harris, a tremendous experience.
